My London

Dear parents and carers,

Over the next few weeks, our work in Year 1 will be focused around the topic of ‘My London’. We will be learning all about the city of London including the Royal family. We were fortunate to have a visit from the Queen herself this week! During this topic we will be covering many areas of the curriculum; particularly Geography, History and Science.

In English we will be retelling the story ‘Paddington’ by acting it out, using the vocabulary from the story, creating story maps and writing our own versions of the story. We will also be learning to write letters to the family of the newest additions to the Royal Family.

In Geography children will be learning to locate London and the Thames on different maps and making maps of our local area and London as a whole. We will also be learning how to stay safe on the roads and learning about post- how the postal service works and why it is important.

In Art we will be learning about portraits by looking at famous artists’ work in London art galleries and creating self-portraits. We will also be learning about and creating landscape paintings of sunrises and sunsets in London.

In P.E. we will be learning to play traditional UK games and sports such as football, cricket and touch tag.

In History we will be learning about the Royal family including their homes, the imminent Royal wedding, Crown jewels, The Queen, Royal crest & flag. Alongside this we will look at British traditions such as the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace and hosting our own street party.

In Science and Design and Technology we will be learning about the weather and seasons, particularly in London, including how the weather/climate has shaped London. We will be learning to name British plants and trees and we will visit some London parks to help us with this learning. Our Design and Technology project will be designing and making a London landmark.

Finally the curriculum web can be found on the school website in ‘CHILDREN’ on our Year Group Page. There is also a survey on our school website under ‘PARENTS’/’SURVEYS’. Please let us know about what you think about our new curriculum!

Activities to do at home

Continuing the learning from school to home is also very important and helps our children progress even further. So we will also provide a home learning folder, and send home some work each week to build on the learning in school. We hope it will help you reinforce the learning that takes place at school.

REMINDERS

Year 1 P.E.

Please note that Year 1 P.E. sessions will take place on Mondays and Fridays.  Please ensure that your child brings the correct P.E. uniform on a Monday and leaves it in school until Friday, when it can then be taken home. The correct uniform consists of black shorts / tracksuit bottoms and a plain white T-shirt. Please note that football shirts cannot be worn. Suitable black footwear should also be provided.

Phonics books

Your child will be issued with a new reading book and a story book at the end of each week. Please ensure that these books are returned by the following Wednesday at the latest.  It is important that you take time to listen to your child read, and support them as they need it.

Reading books

Please remember also that the children are welcome to take library books from the Year 1 classrooms to read at home. Each class group has a file in the reading area – please note down the date and title of the book you are borrowing. Please don’t forget to return these to school.

Year 1 Clubs

Year 1 clubs this year are every Thursday after school. We would encourage all children to attend, if possible.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Kind Regards

Year 1 Team
