Welcome to the Year 5 Topic
This term our topic is ‘Victorian London’. This coincides with a visit from the Queen who has asked us to learn all about her family history as well as about London and the Thames as she has lost her memory! We are certain that our Year 5 pupils will be able to rise to the challenge of aiding the Queen! There were many drastic changes to London, the UK and the wider world during the Victorian era. Developments in education, policing and justice, technology, industry, medicine, transport and civil engineering all altered standards of living dramatically, and have a strong legacy for how we live our life today. We will be visiting places of interest around the city to help our understanding - the first being on May 4th when we are going to the Royal Courts of Justice.
In English, we are writing a non-chronological report about the Victorian era. We will then move onto a narrative based around the Philip Pullman book ‘The New Cut Gang’. This will also allow the pupils to explore exciting mystery texts set in the Victorian era. Along the way we will also look at Sherlock Holmes!
In Maths we will be learning about decimals, angles, units, area and perimeter, and volume. There is a lot of content in the Year 5 syllabus and we move quickly. Remember children can use Mathletics to help practise at home.
Homework is now given on a Friday and is due in the following Friday. We will be linking homework to in-class activities even more than previously. Sometimes we will ask children to research or prepare for a future lesson, or ask them to consolidate their knowledge from a previous lesson. This makes it crucial that children try hard with their homework, and complete it on time. Thank you for your support with homework and the children’s reading.
The children will still have PE twice a week and we would appreciate it if they could bring their kits in on a Monday and take them home on a Friday. If you could take the time to clearly label your child’s uniform and PE kit this would be extremely helpful.
Please remember that Year 5 pupils must stay on a Tuesday for guitar lessons, unless you have provided written consent.
If you have any other questions or concerns please do not hesitate to come and speak to us. If you have not already signed up for parents evening, please do so. The final parents evening will take place on Wednesday 2nd May.
Finally, the curriculum web can be found on the school website in ‘CHILDREN’ on our Year Group Page. There is also a survey on our school website under ‘PARENTS’/’SURVEYS’. Please let us know about what you think about our new curriculum!
Thank you for your continuing support,
Bridie, Ali, Halima and Nicki (The Year 5 Team)
