Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

You should be able to find all you need to know about the learning that is happening in Year 5 on this website.

The teachers in Year 5 are Nicki (Bazalgette), Harry (Taranaki) and Bridie (Vancouver).

Polite Reminders

no PE kits to be brought in on Monday and taken home on a Friday

no Reading journals to be completed for every weekday morning

no Homework to be handed out on Wednesday and returned the following Wednesday - unless otherwise stated

no Spelling log books to be with the children at school each day to record any spellings they need to take ownership of

Our topic for the Spring Term is ‘What A Wonderful World. The children will be learning about some of the geographical aspects of the world including natural disasters, biomes and the creatures that inhabit it. They will also be learning about climate change, local and global environment issues and how to use different maps to find out information. For more information, please see our topic web below.

Homework will continue to be given on a Wednesday and the children will have until the following Wednesday to bring it back. Please continue to support your child with their homework and help them to develop a sense of responsibility around getting work done on time. Reading Journals are to be completed every weekday. They are an opportunity for the children to record what they have been reading, to practise writing clear and precise notes and to practise handwriting. Please make sure they are completed to a high standard. We would also appreciate your help in making our children’s handwriting truly excellent. Regular practice will contribute to neater and pacier handwriting. We are also aiming to increase our children’s mental maths ability. The end of Year 4 expectation is that all children should know their times tables up to 12 x 12 so we need to make sure that our children have a confident and speedy recall of the times tables. The children will also benefit from taking advantage of our Mathletics online activities. Vancouver class have been particularly successful at this and we would like to encourage some healthy competition to perhaps see Bazelgette and Taranaki achieve even greater success?

The children will still have PE twice a week and we would appreciate it if they could bring their kits in on a Monday and take them home on a Friday. If you could take the time to clearly label your child’s uniform and PE kit this would be extremely helpful.

Spy Stories

The children will be using their experience from Fairplay House and their mission, set by a mysterious nemesis, to inspire them to write a suspenseful spy story.

In Maths, we will be looking at word problems, graphs and fractions.

Play some of the games below to test your knowledge!
