Maths

At Britannia Education Trust we use the ‘Maths No Problem’ scheme as a tool to deliver the core concepts of the Maths National Curriculum 2014. Maths No Problem is a child-centred approach that uses physical resources, problem solving and group work to engage and inspire pupils. The series is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and recommended by the DfE for schools on the Teaching for Mastery.

Our Maths curriculum aims to:

  • Ensure all pupils are fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics so that pupils have a secure conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Develop confident, eloquent mathematicians who are able to articulate their reasoning and understanding.
  • Develop pupils’ ability to confidently select and use a variety of resources, strategies and methods in order to solve problems.
  • Provide differentiation within class with all pupils moving broadly at the same pace.
  • Provide children with the opportunities to recognise the importance of Mathematics in the wider world so that they are able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in a variety of situations in their lives.

Maths lessons take a pupil led exploratory approach. Each lesson is anchored around an ‘In focus’ task which gives pupils the opportunity to develop their communication skills, collaborative thinking, independence and metacognition. Pupils’ understanding from this task is then reinforced by teacher modelling and class discussions. These skills are further developed through the Guided Practice task where pupils are provided with the opportunity to develop their eloquence and fluency.  Pupils achieve this by applying and articulating their understanding of key mathematical concepts and strategies with their partner. Once pupils have achieved this, they are ready to demonstrate their fluency by completing the final written activity independently.
